(AllHipHop News) The record label that brought the world projects by Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Big L, and Company Flow is the latest subject of Myspace’s Throwback Thursday feature.
The Oral History of Rawkus Records tapped over 25 rappers, producers, and label personnel to share back stories about the New York City based company founded by Brian Brater and Jarret Myer.
Among the Rawkus alum and associates that contributed to the article include Brater, Kweli, Monch, DJ Premier, John Forte, El-P, Kool G Rap, Q-Tip, and R.A. The Rugged Man.
Read excerpts from The Oral History of Rawkus Records below.
Brian Brater: I think I came up with the name Rawkus. I just liked the word and I was really into Wu-Tang and what Loud Records was starting to do around then. This was around ’95 and then the razor blade [logo] was straight. I don’t recall who came up with the razor blade, but we wanted to be different and also be obvious about it. There’s quite a few revisions [of the logo] along the way, but once it bent it really stood out on turntables.
John Forte: It was pretty clear in the beginning they wanted to be underground. They wanted to be edgy and the focus was on hip-hop, although one of the first groups I ended up signing was Plastique which, at least in my opinion, was pretty ground-breaking at the time ’cause they were mixing downtown rock with hip-hop. This preceded the days of Limp Bizkit and similar groups. Plastique’s rapper ended up killing himself and I have a great sadness about it. Plastique had their fingers on the pulse but we didn’t necessarily know how to get the proper sound out of them. It was a tough sell ’cause people say you’re confused, like are you rappers or skate-rock guys or punk? They were all of those things. So while the push was hip-hop, we were willing to play around with the downtown sub-culture and expand our horizon.
R.A. The Rugged Man: A lot of the broke rappers would go [to Rawkus] and chill there. We’d go on the computer and play. We had situations where we’d go up to Rawkus and hang out: There’d be a little Asian girl who worked there and you’d try and f**k her, a couple of cute girls would be there or like a little fat chick might be there doing some artwork, girls you’d try and bang. It was a good atmosphere, a lot of good people up there.
EL-P: [In ‘96] my manager, Amaechi, mentioned Rawkus to me. They had reached out about bringing Company Flow over to Rawkus. I hadn’t heard of them before. They weren’t really doing a lot of rap music. They had a group called The Rose Family and a lot of random rock and electronic stuff. So I wasn’t really aware of them. But they reached out as fans of Company Flow. At the time we only had about eight songs out—all of them were on the Funcrusher EP we had pressed up. Stretch and Bob was a big part of how people were listening to music at the time.
Q-Tip: I remember recording “Body Rock” [in 1998] with Mos and Tash. It was just fun, you know? It was a real great vibe. Everything that you hear on the record—the spontaneity, the ad-libs between me, Mos and Tash—they were real. We really encapsulated how we were feeling on that record.
DJ Premier: I remember Busta Rhymes happened to be with us while recording “Mathematics.” I sold drugs for a short period in my earlier years—not that it came to anything—but I knew my mathematics and I remember Mos Def was breaking down the ounces turning into a kilo and he was a little off with one of the numbers. Busta was like, “Hey, did you hear what he just said?” We rewound the tape and he was right. It was just one number but Busta caught it. And with that beat for “Mathematics,” I remember Scarface saying, “Man, if he don’t do a song to that I want that. I have never heard a beat like that in my life.” I love that beat.
Pharoahe Monch: Making “Simon Says” was one of the most interesting experiences ever. Everybody went bananas, it was surreal. I remember Headqcourterz was there in Premier’s studio, D&D, which is now named after him, and he was the first one to really bug out to the song. Don’t get me wrong, I was pleased with the reaction but I know how to make beats and I knew it made me feel powerful and I hadn’t heard hip-hop like that in a long time. Lyrically, I was just being so direct and having a lot of moxie and flavor. So when I played it the reaction was what I expected it to be.
Kool G Rap: Right before Big L’s death, Big Pun was hot and was performing at The Apollo and wanted me to come out during his show and do “Ill Street Blues.” When I went there that night Big L was there so there was a rap session in the dressing room with me, Big Pun, Big L and my man Sunkiss from Terror Squad at the time. We had a little rap session with all four of us poppin’ off. That’s my last memory of Big L alive and being there in front of me.
Talib Kweli: I didn’t bring Kanye’s demo to Rawkus, but I was very involved. I was friends with Kanye so I was around for the beginning of that—Kanye wanted to be signed to Rawkus. He wanted to be there because of me and Mos Def. I helped but I wasn’t up there championing him like, “Oh, you have to sign Kanye.” But I did take him on the road while he was trying to get signed… Kanye wanted to be on Rawkus. He didn’t want to be on Capitol—there was a kid over at Capitol who was really trying to get Kanye [Ed: Joe “3H” Weinberger]. Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam wasn’t Kanye’s choice at all—it was just like a default because no one else would give him a deal so he might as well go with who he was making music with.

Lindsay Lohan appeared on last night’s episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and the crack shenanigans were all over the place. It amazes me how hosts and professionals like Andy Cohen, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and Oprah are so NICE to her. I guess there’s the idea of “giving her enough rope” but it also feels like Lindsay is always going to be given “second chances” by pretty much everyone. Unfortunately, Bravo has split up the interview into like ten different videos, so if you’d like to try to search through the maze of clips, go here. I’m only including three videos.
Here’s LL talking about Coachella and how much fun she had not being fall-down drunk.
This is where LL gets “real” about her sex list, which was published in In Touch Weekly last month. She claims she made the list as part of the program and that someone (Dina) took a photo of the list and sold it to In Touch. So, the list is real. She really slept with all of those people.
In this video, Lindsay actually claims that her mother doesn’t drink. It’s like Lindsay doesn’t know how to NOT crack-lie.
During the interview, LL also claimed she was hanging out with Beyonce and that Beyonce recognized her and came up to her and they talked about “our sisters.” I don’t believe that. Crack lie. Cohen also asked Lohan about the comments Rosie O’Donnell recently made about LL’s OWN show. Rosie said the show was “a tragedy on every level,” which is a pretty dead-on assessment. But the Crack-Deflector told Cohen: “I heard about that and it just seems like she’s bored. I don’t understand whenever actresses talk nasty about other actresses. I find that to be really sad.”
The funniest/saddest crack lie/deflection was when Cohen asked about how she had wine in her apartment, a storyline on her OWN series. LL said: “Do you think I’m not smarter than this by now? I had a dinner party the night before and I cooked dinner … and they didn’t show this on the show, which is kind of a bummer. I cook a lot on the show. I like to cook at home.” LOL, did she really ask “Do you think I’m not smarter than this by now?” No, Lindsay. We KNOW you’re not smart enough by now.

My good friend Gail, rest her soul, once gave me the advice not to date guys from work, saying “you don’t sh*t where you eat.” I know now that Gail didn’t come up with that, and I didn’t follow her sage advice at the time because I was young and worked with a lot of guys. So that must be Nina Dobrev’s predicament. She’s 25, she works with extremely hot guys, and she sometimes ends up in relationships with them. Star Magazine is claiming that Nina is dating her Vampire Diaries costar Michael Trevino. Michael plays a werewolf on the show. Nina was of course in a longterm on-off relationship with her other VD costar, Ian Somerhalder. Ian is supposedly ok with this.
The latest man to fall under Nina Dobrev’s spell is her longtime friend and Vampire Diaries costar Michael Trevino, 29. Sources say the couple have been hooking up the past few weeks. “It’s pretty casual right now,” a set source tells Star, “but Mike likes her a lot and would love for things to get more serious.” Nina- 25, hinted at their romance on March 30 when she posted a picture to Instagram of the pair bowling. They even have the blessing of their fellow costar – and her ex – Ian Somerhalder.
[From Star Magazine, print edition, April 28, 2014]
Michael has the same “androgynous blue steel” look as Ian. Nina must be into that. I checked Nina’s alleged dating history, on Who’s Dated Who (the grammar girl in me wants to change that to “Who’s Dated Whom”), and she previously dated three guys from her TV show “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” Nina was on Degrassi from 2006-2009, and she’s said to have dated costars Daniel Clark, Ben Hollingsworth and Evan Williams. (Ben was only on one episode, but Daniel and Evan were regulars.) That’s not to shade Nina! She seems like a serial monogamist, and as I mentioned, I did the same when I was in my 20s. (Plus dudes do it, see Kit Harrington.)
Also, it’s possible Nina and Michael are just friends. People are commenting on Instagram that he’s with Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee.
Here’s Nina’s photo from Instagram that started all these rumors:

Melissa Joan Hart on Posing in a Bikini Post-40-Lb. Weight Loss: ‘I Wasn’t Trying to Prove Anything Except for That I Felt Great’
Melissa Joan Hart, 38, recently revealed all — of her 40-lb. weight loss, that is — in a sexy pink bikini as a preview of her upcoming Nutrisystem ad. And now that her ad is finally hitting the airwaves, Hart spoke to PEOPLE about her weight loss journey, inadvertently getting a workout thanks to her three cute sons and whether or not we’ll see her in a bikini again. Check out her candid interview (and watch her new ad!) below.
Despite the huge smile in her Instagram reveal, Hart (who decided to team up with Nutrisystem after giving birth to son Tucker in 2012) was hesitant to show off in the super-bright swimwear. But she worked up the courage to do it after dropping the last few pounds. “I never wear a bikini, I’m always embarrassed. And I was like, ‘Let me get over it,’” she says. “Let me just swallow my pride a little and do it while I am still in my thirties, because as I get older I’m going to be less likely to put on a bikini. So, I did it.”
“Probably the last time [I wore a bikini], I was on your cover. I really just don’t wear bikinis. I was shy to wear the bikini [in the ad],” she says. “I was like, ‘I’m not in my twenties, I don’t want to wear the bikini. I want to be in a classy swimsuit!’ But at the same time, I was like, ‘You know what, I can do it. I’m feeling good.’ So I went ahead and took the risk.”
But though she loves the way the photos turned out, don’t look for her to be sporting a skimpy two-piece at the beach anytime soon. “I’m a mom … I want to make my boys proud, and my husband. I don’t want to try to prove to anybody that I’m any younger than I am, or any different than I am. I wasn’t trying to prove anything except for that I felt great and I feel like I look good.”
Was there a number on the scale Hart wanted to hit before going for the full reveal? Not exactly, she says: “When you get that naked, it has to be more about what your body looks like. And sometimes the scale doesn’t always go along with how great your body looks. I have a lot of curves, and I love that about myself. So, I wanted to be true to that.”
“I could probably lose another five to 10 pounds if I really, really wanted to, but at that point I’m not working out, I have no muscle on my body, and I have no shape to me,” she continues. “And that to me, especially at my age, is not attractive. My friends always say, ‘You sacrifice your face for your ass, or your ass for your face.’ … I just want to be feminine, you know?”
The actress maintains her weight loss with the help of Nutrisystem (including using the brand’s “Fast Five” weeklong plan to prep for the photoshoot), cutting out salty and sugary foods and by tagging along with friends to gym classes. And of course, there’s always her kids to keep her in shape. “Just keeping the little ones alive is a workout alone, trying to keep them from falling down stairs and slides and off playgrounds … There’s a lot of workouts in this family for sure, whether you want it or not,” she jokes.
But she gets serious about her gym time when she needs it. “When I really want to hit it hard, I schedule it in, and I make sure I make the time for it, because it is a priority. Whether it’s going for early morning runs before hey wake up or going to the gym after I drop them off at school, or right after work. Or maybe fitting it on lunch hour, trying to find those times.”
And though she doesn’t think she’ll be wearing the ad’s Victoria’s Secret swimsuit again (“That’s the last thing I need is someone catching a picture of me in that bikini!”) she does have plenty of motivation to keep fit for the future — and that includes being inspired by other celebrities who’ve snapped back immediately post-baby.
“I love looking at people that I’m motivated by and saying, ‘Gwen Stefani looks fantastic. I want to be like Gwen Stefani,’” she says. “Sometimes it’s not always reasonable to look at somebody and draw inspiration off them. I actually don’t mind the pressure as a celebrity, because I don’t mind using it to try to get me to the gym. People expect me to look good! [But] you’ve got to take it with a healthy dose of reality. It’s gotta be what really works for me. Don’t kill yourself for it, but maybe start to make some changes.”
What’s your take on bikinis? How do you squeeze in a workout? Share your weight-loss secrets below!

Welcome to this week’s installment of The Most Important People on The Internet coming at you a day early thanks to America’s magic mascot rising from the dead two thousand years ago because that’s literally how long we’ve been beating the zombie genre into the ground. Anyway, I’ve also got two long as shit comments that broke our gallery, so special thanks to Pierce Bronzetan and cmonreally for paying careful attention to Katherine Heigl‘s Duane Reade lawsuit and pointing out the goddamn ridiculousness of Kim Kardashian‘s Audrey Hepburn photo shoot respectively. May the Holy Bunny fill your Fallopian tubes with assorted eggs, candies, and those little birds made out of marshmallows. For as it is written.
“Jesus, Mom! Of course, I don’t have to check where we are on this map! I’m Katherine Heigl! My big break came in 1999, when I was cast in a starring role on the teen science-fiction show Roswell which ran for three seasons. The part widened my exposure in Hollywood, and I filmed a variety of smaller projects during the show’s hiatus. After Roswell was canceled in 2002, I appeared in several made-for-TV movies, including a prequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and two Lifetime movies based on the Janet Oke novels Love’s Enduring Promise and Love Comes Softly. Between roles in independent and low-budget films (including Zyzzyx Road, which was released in 2006 to poor reviews, becoming infamously known as the lowest-grossing film in history), I filmed a pilot for a TV show about medical interns at a Seattle Hospital, which was eventually titled Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s Anatomy premiered in March 2005 and immediately became a smash hit, elevating my and my co-stars’ profiles in Hollywood. I met with more success in 2006 and 2007: I was nominated for a Golden Globe, and then won an Emmy Award (best supporting actress) for my role as Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy. Additionally, I starred in the 2007 smash comedy hit Knocked Up alongside Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, and finished the year by marrying fiancé Josh Kelley in Park City, Utah. Around this same time, I worked with YOU to start my own production company, Abishag Productions. I named the company after the female figure (Abishag) in the Robert Frost poem “Provide, Provide.” Even as my reputation as a diva spiraled out of control, I continued to meet with both professional and personal success. From 2008 to 2010, I headlined four romantic comedies: 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth, Killers and Life as We Know It. So, yes, I think I fucking know where we are!”

This is Miley Cyrus’ latest sad selfie from a hospital bed. Earlier this week, I discussed Miley’s allergic reaction to antibiotics that landed her in an ambulance. This has been a rough month for Miley, who is on tour but also dealing with the death of her dog, Floyd. I’m troubled by the internet buzzings about Miley making this whole thing up. People have said that an “allergic reaction” must be the new “exhaustion.” Is society really that jaded? Not every celebrity is a Lohan.
According to the official statement issued by Miley’s team, she suffered a sinus infection and was prescribed Cephalexin (an antibiotic). She experienced an “extreme allergic reaction.” Miley has a rash over her entire body. She will be hospitalized anywhere from 5 to 27 days, and several tour dates have been rescheduled. Miley is said to be “devastated about missing shows.” She’s also very upset that people are smirking at her medical emergency. Miley wants everyone to “shut the f— up and let me heal.” Really:
Has Miley been partying on tour? Definitely. Has she been smoking pot and popping Molly. Certainly. Has she lost sleep and indulged more than usual after Floyd’s death? Probably. None of that makes any difference to what she’s experiencing. She had a sinus infection. She took prescription medicine and nearly died as a result. Give the girl a break already.

Krayzie Bone has finally announced the release date for the first installment of his highly anticipated trilogy album, Chasing the Devil.
First up in the trilogy series is Chasing the Devil: Temptation, due to hit stores July 22nd of this year. Krayzie Bone initially pushed for the first installment to be released on 4/20 aka National Weed Day but the date was soon pushed back after signing a deal with RBC Records.
“I know our fan family has been anxiously anticipating the release of my final solo album,” said the Cleveland native in a press release via HipHop DX. “There is no need to feel disappointed. I am very confident that once it is finally released on the new street date, it will definitely be worth the wait. I can honestly say that I haven’t felt this complete about a solo album of mine since Thug Mentality.”
After supplying numerous hits with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Krayzie Bone decided to try a different more solitary route. Altogether the rapper has released five solo projects and revealed the trilogy will be his last one.-Morgan Murrell

(AllHipHop News) A picture is worth a thousand words, but add a few hashtags to the caption and then the pic can actually create a thousand questions. That’s the case for a photo uploaded to Q-Tip’s Instagram page.
The A Tribe Called Quest member posted a picture of him and fellow producing legend Dr. Dre in the studio. The caption for the picture simply read, “#detox #lastzulu #hideyodrummachines #beatsnrhymes.”
The first two hashtags refer to Q-Tip and Dre’s respective upcoming solo albums. Dre’s Detox has reached urban legend status after over a decade of speculation about its release, and Q-Tip has been discussing his The Last Zulu LP for at least a year.
The Abstract leaves the door open to question if the pic is a statement about what’s to come from the two Hip Hop titans. Other producers like Bink! have revealed they provided tracks in recent months for a potential Detox album. Q-Tip previously shared another studio photo featuring Kendrick Lamar. So both Dr. Dre and Q-Tip seem to be putting in work for the projects.

Here are some photos of Duchess Kate and Prince William during their visit to Manly Beach on Sydney’s North Shore in Australia today. They also attended some kind of Easter/Good Friday fair where they interacted with animals and farmers and such, which I’ll get to in a moment. First, let’s talk about fashion. Kate wore her first Australian-designer dress for today’s activities. This white eyelet/lace dress is by Aussie designer Zimmerman. Thoughts? I don’t hate it. It’s a pretty dress and it reminds me of something girly you might buy for a very young child. Is it appropriate on a woman in her 30s? In my opinion, not really, but I might feel differently if I saw the dress styled in a different way. I don’t care for the dress paired with those high wedged sandals. Anyway, while Kate and William were watching some farm animals at the fair, Kate cracked a joke about William’s baldness. YOU IN DANGER, GURL.
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge visit Manly Beach on Sydney’s north shore, during their royal tour of Australia In the past it has often been his brother Harry ribbing Prince William about his thinning hair. But when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Sydney’s Royal Easter show in Australia on Friday, Kate couldn’t help but make a joke at her husband’s expense. The Duchess cheekily teased her husband about his growing bald patch by suggesting he wear an alpaca toupee.
As they toured large elaborate displays of produce, grouped by Australian regions, one exhibitor Lyn Crejan, 67, talked about the wealth of fruit and vegetables displayed in a colourful design behind her. When she showed them a tuft of alpaca wool – which was a similar shade of brown to the Duke’s hair – the Duchess joked about her husband using it as a wig.
‘The princess said (the Duke) should put some on his head,’ said Lyn Cregan, 67, from Glen Innes. ‘She pointed at him and said “You need it more than me.” He laughed.’
When Ms Cregan revealed she used hair lacquer on the pumpkins to give them extra shine, the Duke said he would try the trick next Halloween.

Kate also made a solo visit to a children’s hospice and she made a speech! Here’s the video (she starts speaking around the 35-second mark):
